Disodium Hydrogen Citrate
C6H6Na2O7-1.5H2O --- 263.1 --- CAS 144-33-2
Action and use: Anticoagulant.

DEFINITION
Sodium Acid Citrate contains not less than 98.0% and not more than 104.0% of C6H6Na2O7-1.5H2O.

CHARACTERISTICS
A white powder.
Freely soluble in water; practically insoluble in ethanol (96%).

IDENTIFICATION
Yields the reactions characteristic of sodium salts and of citrates.

TESTS
Acidity: pH of a 3% w/v solution, 4.9 to 5.2
Arsenic: 0.50 g dissolved in 25 mL of water complies with the limit test for arsenic (2 ppm).
Chloride: Dissolve 1.0 g in 100 mL of water. 15 mL of the resulting solution complies with the limit test for chlorides, (330 ppm).
Oxalate: To pass the test. (150 ppm, calculated as anhydrous oxalic acid).
Sulfate: Dissolve 0.50 g in 57 mL of water and add 3 mL of 2M hydrochloric acid. 15 mL of the resulting solution complies with the limit test for sulfates, (0.12%).
Readily carbonisable substances: Heat 1.0 g, in powder, with 10 mL of sulfuric acid for 30 minutes in a water bath protected from light. Not more than a pale brown colour is produced.

C6H5Na3O7-2H2O --- 294.10
Trisodium citrate dihydrate --- CAS 6132-04-3

DEFINITION
Sodium Citrate is anhydrous or contains two molecules of water of hydration. It contains NLT 99.0% and NMT 100.5% of C6H5Na3O7, calculated on the anhydrous basis.

IDENTIFICATION
A. Identification Tests: General, Sodium
Sample solution: 50 mg/mL
Acceptance criteria: Meets the requirements
B. Identification Tests: General, Citrate
Sample solution: 50 mg/mL
Acceptance criteria: Meets the requirements
C. Upon ignition, it yields an alkaline residue that effervesces when treated with 3 N hydrochloric acid.

Tartrate:
Analysis: To a solution of 1 g in 2 mL of water in a test tube add 1 mL of potassium acetate and 1 mL of 6 N acetic acid. Rub the wall of the tube with a glass rod.
Acceptance criteria: No crystalline precipitate is formed.
Alkalinity:
Sample solution: 1.0 g in 20 mL of water
Acceptance criteria: The Sample solution is alkaline to litmus paper, but after the addition of 0.20 mL of 0.10 N sulfuric acid, no pink color is produced by 1 drop of phenolphthalein.
Water Determination: Dry a sample at 180C for 18 h: the anhydrous form loses NMT 1.0% of its weight; the hydrous form loses 10.0%–13.0% of its weight.
